But that same preference for less social interaction can make introverts ideal remote employees, and you may find that managing a remote team is easier than managing an in-office team. Today’s global economy has generated a shift toward virtual teams, and in 2011, over 3.1 United States employees telecommuted. By 2012, 46% of organizations were using virtual teams for the many advantages they offer, including allowing organizations to access talent in multiple locations, as well as allowing organizations to increase collaboration among both employees and across global business units. With ever-improving technology and more businesses understanding the benefits that remote workers can offer, you’re more likely to have a chance to manage a remote team. As an introvert, you can successfully manage remote employees by using a few important strategies. Establish Team Solidarity While working remotely offers many benefits, it can fail if employees feel like they’re left out of the loop, if they don’t receive important updates about projects they’re working on, and if they don’t feel like they’re part of the team. As a manager, you’ll need to build and maintain team solidarity to ensure that your staff are successful. Building solidarity starts with setting clear expectations for your team. Your staff should always know what they’re working on, what tasks are priorities, and what is expected of them in their individual role. Consider how you would like staff to approach you with questions do you prefer email? Text messages? and encourage employees to use these methods to reach out to you. Be sure to also provide ongoing feedback about how staff are doing. Team-building activities that can be accomplished online can help the members feel like a cohesive unit, and a well-defined goal for the entire team gets everyone working toward the same outcome. As you get to know your team better, you may also find it easier to engage with your team. Also encourage feedback from your team and give them the power to make decisions and influence the project. This encourages your staff to be dedicated to and engaged in the work that they’re doing. Use Multiple Communication Tools Good communication is key to a successful remote team, but it’s also one of the most challenging aspects of leading a remote team as an introvert. For instance, leading an overseas team brings about unique challenges in balancing different time zones, schedules, and cultures. That’s one reason why if you’re outsourcing a team, having a nearshore or onshore partnership can make communication and the overall management experience easier. Regardless of where your team is located, though, there are many ways to foster communication. Use multiple modes of technology to keep the whole team connected, including video conferencing, email, phone calls, and even texting. You may also want to invest in a forum or chat space that allows your staff to engage in real-time. Outline a clear communication policy for the team so staff know how and when to connect with other members and with you. Leading a team when you’re introverted means that some of these meetings may be uncomfortable for you, but you can use techniques to make them easier. Try to schedule one-on-one meetings when appropriate, since these settings have less pressure than you’ll feel speaking in front of a large group of people. When you do need to hold larger team meetings, plan out and distribute an agenda ahead of time to keep things on track. Don’t feel that you have to do all of the talking, too; you can ask team members responsible for certain parts of the project to give updates, which will give you a few minutes to regroup and listen. Be Aware of Burnout Burnout doesn’t just happen to in-office employees; it can affect remote workers, too. In fact, because remote workers may feel grateful to their employers for offering them this location flexibility, these workers may feel indebted to their employers and work longer and harder than they otherwise would. When an employee is remote, employers may add on extra work or shorter deadlines without having an understanding of whether those expectations are realistic. Many situations can cause remote workers to be overworked and face burnout. As a manager, you can help to reduce the chances of employee burnout. Check in with your employees and be aware of what’s going on in their lives, such as an upcoming move, an ill parent, or a new baby. Encourage your team to take vacations and sick days when needed, and try to offer some scheduling flexibility or extra time off after the team meets a big deadline. Set guidelines about work hours and make sure that all team members recognize that emails or inquiries sent after standard hours won’t be addressed until the next business day. Don’t forget to apply these burnout prevention strategies to yourself, too. Managing a team as an introvert can be draining, but with remote management options like text messages and emails, you may find that this remote management is easier than in-person management is. Certainly if you are living in the Northern hemisphere you  should now be experiencing the first signs of Autumn. The trees in the forest just behind my house  are a mix of deciduous  (they always lose their leaves in Autumn) and evergreens  (they retain their  leaves throughout the year). The deciduous trees are beginning to shed their leaves and the colours  or hues  (synonym for colour) are changing from green to yellow brown and rustic reds.The Americans usually refer to Autumn as The Fall. The effects are the same. In the not too distant  future we will be talking about “beer festivals” (in Germany), Halloween across Europe and America  and other festivals connected with the harvests and the religious practices of many countries In my house it is time to put away the light summer clothes and get out the winter woollies  (warmer  clothes). We don’t actually hibernate  (go to sleep for the winter) but we do change our habits a little.Heavy shoes replace sandals  (flip flops), the boots are ready and jumpers and rain coats replace tee  shirts and jackets. I love to see the chestnuts falling. I always collect a few. It reminds me of my  childhood. We called them “conkers”. We had a simple game with conkers that we always played in  late September and through the early weeks of Autumn. You put a small hole through your  chestnut/conker and tied a knot in it then challenged your friends to see whose conker was the  strongest. You took turns striking your opponents’ conker with your conker. The winner was the one  that did not break. Money,  for example.We might be saving for that rainy day  (a day when we really need  some extra cash).He squirrelled  away a nice sum of money over the early summer and was able to  buy his wife a nice winter present.Autumn of his life   alas age catches up on all of us eventually. When we are in the autumn of our  life usually,  we have lived a long time and we are looking forward perhaps to retirement of taking  things a little easier.My grandfather was in the autumn of his life when he decided he was too old  to drive a car anymore. Example: I actually just arrived from the office. If you want to say atualmente you can use the words today,  currently,  or nowadays. For example, The United States is currently recovering from a recession.2. Assistir Assist.In English assist means to help or give support to someone or something. Example:  I assisted the medics with the rescue of the woman.  If you want to say assistir you can use the words attend, watch, or partic ipate. Example: I attended the parents and teachers meeting last Saturday.3. Balcão Balcony.In English balcony is the outside viewing area that is attached to an apartment or home. Example:  Our balcony is off our living room and overlooks the park.  If you want to say balcão  you can use the word counter. Example:  The plates on the counter are clean.4. Costume Costume.In English costume is a disguise worn on the stage or at parties or for special occasions. Example: Im wearing a clown costume for Halloween.  If you want to say costume with the Portuguese meaning,  you can use the word custom or tradition Example:  We have lost many of our customs in the United States.5. Data Data.In English data  means a collection of information and facts. Example:  I need all the data on the case before I make a judgement.  If you want to say data with the Portuguese meaning, you can use the word date. (note: the e is silent and the a is long. It sounds like dayt) Example:  Our wedding date is October 5th.6. Designar Design.In English design as a verb means to plan the form and structure of something. As a noun, it refers to the plan for something. Example:  I love the design of Apples phones.  If you want to say  designar,  use the word designate. Example: She was designated as the new President of the company.  7. Educado Educated.In English educated can be used as a verb to describe giving knowledge or schooling. Example: I was educated in a private school. Or it can be used to describe someone that has some schooling, can read, write, do math or has some special knowledge in specific areas. Example: Mike is a Harvard educated lawyer. If you want to use the word educado you can say, polite.   Example:  Mary seems really polite, she always says please and thank you.8. Enrolar Enroll.In English enroll means to register or to put on a record/list (see assistir). Example: I enrolled in my college classes yesterday. If you want to use enrolar, you can say to wind up, to roll up, or to curl up. Example:  Please wind up the cord and put it in the bag.9. Êxito Exit.In English exit is the way or passage out of a building, plane, bus, etc. Example: It is important to know where the exits are in a plane, in case of an emergency.  If you want to use the word êxito you can say success. Example:  Success comes from a lot of hard work and a little bit of luck.10. Esquisito Exquisite.These two are very different! In English we use exquisite to describe something that is very beautiful and and often delicate. Example: This wine glass is exquisite. If you want to say esquisito, say weird, strange or unusual. For example: The book has many really weird characters that do bizarre things and make it quite an interesting story. 11. Esperto Expert.In English an expert is a person who has special skills or knowledge. Example: They needed an expert in hydro-geology to understand when the river could flood. If you want to use the word esperto you can say cleve r or smart. Example: She is a very clever person, she always has a solution and something witty to say.12. Fábrica Fabric.In English fabric  is the general word for a cloth made by weaving or knitting. Example:  I didnt buy the shirt because I dont like synthetic fabric. If you want to use the word fábrica you can say plant or factory. Example:  Many car factories have left the United States and moved to other countries where labor is cheaper.13. Gripe Grip Gripe.In English grip  is grabbing something with your hands tightly in a strong way. Example:  Help, my grip is slipping, I cant hold on to the rope, Im going to fall!   We also have the word gripe (pronounced like ripe). It means a complaint. For example: He has a lot of gripes about the service quality of our restaurant. If you want to use gripe you can say cold or flu. For example, Ive had a terrible cold for 5 days now.14. Injúria Injury.In English injury is when a body is harmed or damaged by something. For example, The football player had a knee injury and couldnt play in the world cup.  If you want to use the word injúria you can say insult. Example:  She cried after she heard the mans insult.15. Legenda Legend.In English, a legend is a traditional story whose facts are unverified. Example: Greek legends have been influential in literature for a long time. If you want to say legenda, youll want to use the word subtitle. For example: It is a really good way to practice your English to watch a movie in English with English subtitles. 16. Livraria Library.We use library in English to describe a place, usually ran by a government or a university, where you can borrow books for a short time at no charge (biblioteca in Portuguese). For example: We go to the library every week with our daughter to check-out books. We use book store for livraria. For Example: I dont go to the book store often because I read most books on my e-reader. 17. Lanche Lunch.The English word lunch  is used to describe t he mid-day meal (almoço in Portuguese). For example: I always have lunch at noon. We use snack  to say lanche. For example: Im hungry lets get a snack before the meeting, maybe some fruit would be good. 18. Novela Novel.We use novel as a noun to describe fictional books, and as an adjective to describe something new or unusual Example:  The novel had a novel character.  If you want to say novela  in English, use soap opera.19. Parentes Parents.In English we use parents to  refer  to our mother or father, as a group or without referencing gender. Example:  My parents live in St. Louis. A parent needs to give permission for a child to leave the country. You want to say parentes  use the word relatives. For example: I have relatives in Brazil, a couple cousins and my aunt and uncle.10. Particular Particular.Exact same word, two meanings! In English, we use it to talk about a very specific part of a group. Example:  The law was designed to punish a particular group of people. We als o use it to describe something with extra emphasis Example:  The ball hit him in a particularly painful place. If you want to say particular  with the Portuguese meaning, use personal, or private. For example: Infidelity is a private matter even if the people involved are famous. 11. Preservativo Preservative.This one has the potential to lead to some funny/embarrassing situations! In English we use preservative  to describe food additives that help prevent spoilage. If you want to say preservativo  in English, use condom.12. Push Puxe.Similar sound, opposite meanings! Push means to use force to move something away from you. We use pull  to describe puxe  the opposite motion using force to bring something to you.13. Pull Pular.As if the last one wasnt confusing enough! Pull is also a false cognate. You can see its English meaning above. If you want to say pular, use jump.14. Recordar Record.In English, record has a lot of different meanings, none of which are the same as Record ar. As a noun, it can describe something used to save information. Example: There is a record of our conversation stored in the courthouse.  It can also mean the highest achievement for something. Example: Usain Bolt holds the record for the 100 meters. It can also be used as a verb to describe the process of saving information, especially in audio or video form. Example: We recorded our daughters first words on video.  To say recordar, use remember or recall. For example: I remember a lot of things from my childhood.15. Refrigerante Refrigerant.If you ask for a refrigerant in English, most likely youll get a strange look. Its a word not often used in everyday speech to describe chemicals used to cool things. If you want to say refrigerante use soda pop or soft drink.16. Resumir Resume.We use resume  in English in the same way we use continue. Example: After I fell, I got up and resumed running. If you want to say resumir  try summarize.17. Estrangeiro Stranger.In English, a str anger is a person who is unknown. Example: We instructed the school children not to talk to strangers.  If you want to say  estrangeiro, use the word foreigner.18. Taxa Tax.A sum of money demanded by a government (sometimes a very large sum, if youve been making a lot of money!). Stress management is one of the most important tools young students can use to thrive through this challenging yet important time in their academic careers. Get on the same page One really important thing for students and parents to do is to sit down and get on the same page in regards to the college application process. In many instances, students and parents have different ideas of when things should get done, how many schools they should apply to, or other important details regarding admissions. If possible, students and parents should sit down before they even start the process but, at this point in the year, its good just to have a chat about what still needs to be completed and within what timeframe. 2.   Prioritize applications by due dates At this point in the process, its also important for students to prioritize their applications by the due date. Most schools have a due date of December 1, but some will allow students to apply as late as January or even offer a rolling deadline. Parents can also help students stay on track by setting aside some time for them at the weekend where they can concentrate 100% on the college admissions process (READ: 4 Differences Between High School and College English Courses). 3.   Set aside a particular time during the week just for college applications Once a student sits down for their specified application time, its important that they start out by getting organized. Is there anything thats due within the next week? Anything they need to send to their college counselor? Any important revisions they need to make? After a student is completely organized, they can start working on their personal statements as well as their supplemental essays for each university. If students are using the Common Application, they will be able to write one main essay but may need to answer several supplemental questions that describe who they are as a student and person. Providing a separate time for these tasks allows students to focus totally on their applications and deal with other homework assignments later on. 4. Work with a college counselor Its imperative that students work with a college counselor at some point during the application process. Whether they work with the counselor at their school or with an independent consultant, these professionals have important up-to-date information that students may find difficult to locate and process on their own. Counselors can help students choose different types of colleges to apply to, help them fill out their various forms, and give them essential feedback on their personal statement. 5.   Have a backup plan (or two) Its also a good idea for students to have a backup plan. If a student has their heart set on just one particular university, parents can provide helpful suggestions for similar universities they can apply to â€" just in case. For the most part, students choose one or two dream schools that make up their primary plan, but they should have target schools, safety schools, and other options in the works so that they have the best chance of going to a great university after graduation, even if it wasn’t their first choice.
